Cost is the wrong starting point
One of the biggest mistakes garages make when choosing garage management software is starting with the monthly price.
Price matters, obviously. But value matters much more. Cheap software that wastes your team's time is not cheap. Expensive software full of features your garage never uses is not good value either.
Ask what the system actually improves. Does it make estimates faster? Can reception see what is happening without chasing technicians? Can the team see what is waiting for parts, what needs authorisation and what is ready to invoice? Can a customer enquiry become a live job without the same information being entered again and again?
That is where the value comes from. Not the number of buttons on the screen.
Choose carefully because changing systems once the whole garage is running through one is painful. You should be choosing the system you want to grow with, not the one you already expect to replace.
Autoflow: built around the insurance world
I used Autoflow for years. I did not enjoy using it.
That does not mean Autoflow failed at what it was designed to do. It means what Autoflow was designed to do is very different from what most independent garages actually need.
Autoflow exists in a world of insurer requirements, work providers, claims information, job deployments, repair standards and communication between multiple organisations. For an insurance bodyshop, that information can be necessary. For the average independent garage, it is not.
If your workshop mainly deals directly with customers, servicing, mechanical repairs, diagnostics, MOT work and normal vehicle maintenance, building the whole operation around software designed for insurer claims makes very little sense.
Independent garages need speed, clear jobs, estimates, invoices and technicians and reception looking at the same information. That is a different problem.
Techman: when more becomes too much
Techman is one of the biggest names in garage management software and it has a lot inside it.
That sounds like an advantage. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is exactly the problem.
Large systems naturally become more complicated as they try to solve more situations for more businesses. You get integrations, technician tracking, departments, accounting connections, reporting tools, configuration options and layers of administration.
For a large operation, some of that may be useful. But most independent garages are not running five departments with twenty office staff. They have technicians, reception, maybe somebody handling parts, and often an owner who is still involved with half the work going through the workshop.
That garage does not need software that feels like it was designed for a national company. It needs software that lets a small team work like a much bigger one.
A garage management system should remove administration from the business. It should not become another thing somebody has to administer.
Garage Hive: feature count is not the same as speed
Garage Hive covers a lot of ground. That is probably why it has become popular with workshops looking for a broad garage management system.
But broad coverage comes with a trade off. The more a platform tries to do, the more configuration, training, licences and connected systems can become part of the experience.
Do not compare systems using a feature checklist. Almost every established platform can create customers, vehicles, jobs, estimates and invoices. That tells you almost nothing.
The better questions are how quickly those things happen and how much effort your staff need to put in. Can reception understand the workshop at a glance? Can somebody new understand the software without days of training? Does every employee need another paid licence? Does the system remove administration or just organise it?
Mozomay was never designed to win a competition for the longest feature list. It was designed to make the everyday work inside a garage happen faster.
Where Mozomay fits
Mozomay was built because I had spent years using garage software while actually working inside a garage.
I knew what annoyed reception because I had done reception. I knew what slowed down parts because I had ordered parts. I knew what technicians hated because I had watched them deal with systems that made simple updates harder than they needed to be.
Most independent garages do not have an information problem. They have a movement problem. Information comes into the business but does not move properly.
A customer sends an enquiry. Someone writes it down. Someone calls them. Someone creates a job. The technician asks what was authorised. Reception asks whether the car is finished. Parts asks which job something belongs to. The customer calls asking for an update. Then somebody has to turn all of that into an invoice.
Mozomay Workflow puts that journey into one system. The enquiry becomes the estimate. The estimate becomes the job. The job carries the vehicle, customer, technician, images, notes, parts, communication and pricing with it until it becomes an invoice.
There is no charge per user. If you have three members of staff today and twelve next year, you do not get punished for growing.
Mozomay OS takes it further. Your website and garage management system become part of the same process, so the website helps create the work and Workflow helps you manage it.
One system. One flow. From the customer finding your garage to the invoice leaving it.
The questions to ask before choosing garage management software
Strip the marketing away and ask these questions.
- Can my whole team understand this system?
- Can it handle the full journey from enquiry to invoice?
- Does it make the common actions inside the garage easier?
- Will I pay more every time I employ somebody?
- Does the system need integrations before the basics feel complete?
- Can I see what is happening in the workshop immediately?
- Was it actually built for a garage like mine?
Choose the system built for your garage
Software built for insurance bodyshops will naturally prioritise insurance workflows. Software built for large organisations will naturally prioritise administration and integration.
Mozomay is built around independent garages. That means speed, simplicity, visibility and one connected workflow come first.
There are plenty of garage management systems available in the UK. We did not build Mozomay because garages needed another one. We built it because we believed the independent garage deserved one that was actually built around them.
